Commonwealth baton enthuses children in remote British Overseas Territory
School children in the remote British Overseas Territory of St Helena in the South Atlantic clamoured to see and touch The Melbourne 2006 Queen's Baton. This official symbol of the 2006 Commonwealth Games arrived via the only means of transport to the island - the RMS St Helena - as the island does not have an airport. Peter Williams a previous St Helenian Games participant was swamped by enthusiastic and excited children, perhaps dreaming of a chance to compete themselves in the future. The baton's arrival marked its 19th visit of the 71-nation tour of the Commonwealth covering some 180,000 kms and triggered a weeks of sports and games on the island.
